He lives in a village called Abam Abo in a very remote area of Northern Wollo, which was hit very hard by drought and famine in 1985. His mother left Wollo with his 3 brothers to go to Ebnat, where there was a feeding center. Wagaye (who was around 6 or 7 at the time) stayed behind with his father (Endale Zegye), to work as a shepherd so they could earn some money. His father eventually passed away, leaving Wagaye the only one left in his immediate family. The children were taken from the feeding center after their mother died and father did not have the means to care for them.
