Both Ethiopian parents are living with health issues, but they wanted their children to be taken care of. Benchayew knew that adoption was an option, but she was not interested. She was told, instead, that she was going to Addis to school. When she arrived in Addis, she was placed in an orphanage along with her brother. Benchayew likely remembers this.
